Michel Sidemion was born in Togo, West Africa but he came to the Bronx, New York City, USA when he was about three years old. With diverse and colorful environment that New York City provides, he has been interested in “inclusive communication” for the most part of his life as long as he can remember. He was fascinated by how innovative technology can affect the society in transcending way by creating new ways to communicate and share ideas in international community.
He stated that there were many biases and one-sided stories in news media throughout the history of the world. Consequently, some people are unable to or limited to express their ideas and opinion freely. This idea applies not only to news media but also affects the general society micro, such as school and/or work environment, to macro, such as a city and/or a country, scale.
According to Sidemion, the goal of fostering inclusive communication can be reached by the combination of technology with innovation through programming with specific intention. This enhances imagination and creativity. He stated that this type of technology can give broader view point to people and can spur creativity to create better and effective interaction among diverse people.
In Sidemion’s opinion, technology is there to connect people with each other, especially in this time of the era where more people have access to internet than people of any era before.
Technology allows people to communicate ideas, share experiences with each other, and evaluate those ideas. This continuing advancement in technology helps to bring awareness to “inclusivity,” which is what Sidemion wants to promote.
With inclusive communication as a key core value in his mind, Sidemion wants to be a game designer. He said with passion that game is not only for recreation as most people believe. As a game designer, he believes he can use video game as platform of creativity, inclusion, and education; thus bringing people with different backgrounds and interests together. For example, he played a game in his biology class last school year that helps students to learn about blood types through a fun and active way. This is an example where innovative technology has been integrated to a school curriculum and offered students with different, yet better experience of learning through new medium.
Sidemion hopes to bring more awareness to the topic of inclusion through this program. Thus, he can make this world into a better place by honing skills he already has and learning new knowledges from this course.
