- Why do we really need A.I.? Uday, a student at the Stanford Summer course, asks this question, as he wonders about the world's fascination about A.I.s. Perhaps, the world doesn't really need A.I. Like, can't all the work be done by humans anyway? Uday raises a good point. With 7 Billion people on this planet, we could easily create a world where A.I. is never even needed. With non-sentient computers, we could survive and even thrive, moving to other planets. Although we may miss an opportunity to have A.I. work for us, Uday says that we dont need A.I. at a sentient level at all.
In fact, in agreement with Uday, many studies have been done on safe A.I., and all of them have shown that not only are they smarter than humans, or at least would be when created, but they are also more able than us. For example, one study was done on an A.I. in a box. The A.I. (a test subject) was connected with one person outside the box, who had only goal, keep the A.I. inside the box. Nine times out of ten however, the test subject convinced the person to let them have internet access, with which an A.I. could do lethal and terrifying things.
So, based on the fact that A.I. can generally outthink humans, and they have a lot more power than us, especially on the internet, Uday thinks that we should not ever even make A.I. sentient enough to either replace or destroy us.
